Well, our trip is over! Can't believe it-we planned, prepared and waited for so long, and now it is over.
We left Sundance on Saturday morning at 6:45 AM. After dropping off the trash, we drove for several hours before a stop at Starbucks. When we got into Idaho, there were only 2 rest areas, and both were closed! However, we counted 6 rest areas in Oregon, between the Idaho border and home. And all were open, but we didn't stop at any. We stopped for lunch in Boise, Idaho, and then for a quick dinner in The Dalles. We arrived back at the Ward's house about 8:30, where several husbands were waiting with flowers for their wives. Everyone got their suitcases, divided up the leftover food, and went home happy but exhausted.
We are so thankful that we didn't have any car problems. Four cars and a trailer drove 2,056 miles each and no flat tires!
We said it last year and it bears repeating:if you can go do unassigned territory, especially in Utah, GO!  The people we talked to were very polite, just imagine starting your presentation by saying you are one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and the householder is still pleasant. It really makes you value your brotherhood; you are able to meet brothers and sisters from different places, and realize you are all there for the same purpose. We met each day in the park for lunch, and so did the group from California. There was also a group of brothers from Colorado. The group from California invited us for a picnic; but it was on Saturday, the day we were leaving.
Here are our totals for the week:
13 Books
123 Brochures
326 Hours
148 Magazines
21 Return  Visits
98 General Interest Calls
23 Outstanding Calls

Even though we are home, this is not the end of our blog. There are several experiences yet to be posted, and some more pictures of the outstanding scenery.
Jeff and Barbara Weathers, one of the special pioneer couples, are coming out to Oregon next month.Maybe they will go in service with us and we can post their impressions of the differences of working in service in Portland.

Tuesday evening update

Yes, things have changed here with the congregation being established as well as the LDS' view on government. Last night we went to the Orem meeting where a group of 22 from Ontario, CA and 4 brothers from Colorado also attended.  The group from CA are young, very friendly and having a great time.  This morning they invited us to their house Sat afternoon for a barbecue, but we will be on our way home.  The brothers from CO were here in May with a group and are here again for 6 weeks and are thinking of moving here. There is also a group working in Draper, just north of Orem who came to check out Orem last night with included Randy Gillette, his wife, and daughter with her family.  We come to the KH in Provo each morning for meeting for field service to meet with all these groups, with Ted Woessner conducting, who is training how to use questions and reason with people on their level.

It seems that since Romney lost the election the LDS are much more willing to admit the governments are under the Devil's control, especially after we reason from the scriptures on this.  In fact one man that had his radio blasting Rush L. said that "If God doesn't destroy the governments soon, he will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah".  We are working many apts and dorms next to Utah Valley University finding many young x- missionaries and well as students from around the world which includes some Muslims.

One young Muslim man Leon and Beth found today is from France and of course speaks French.  We started with Ex 3:15 that we worship the God of Abraham, Jehovah. This put us on a common ground that we recognize Abraham as a prophet.  Then we asked Hanzi about how spirits are tested coming from heaven (like LDS teach as well) and being born here on earth.  What if they are born in Africa where there is starvation and they live only a few days, how is that a fair test?  The same is true if born to parents on Meth or alcohol and have problems from birth, is that fair and just?  He said no. Is Allah unfair or unjust? No  Then we covered Gen 2:7 regarding the soul.  Hanzi took the Teach bk, we showed him the website and he was excited to see the book in French.  He said we can come back on Thursday.

Tonight we finished the Watchtower study and talked about service.  Wednesday is a hiking/shopping/rest day.

The maintenance man here at the house told us about some of the history here.  Robert Redford lives across the valley and rents this house several months a year when he has guests for his director and film festivals.  Infact, the movie Jeremiah Johnson was filmed here right at the edge of the property with the mountains and Stewart falls in the background..We will walk there tomorrow and up to the falls.  If we get a little higher the sisters will be able to see his house in the distance.  Will keep you posted on how that goes, Bernie.

Danny Morris' field experience

On Monday we met a young man, that had never before talked with Jehovah's Witnesses. We shared with him the verses from Luke 4 and Daniel 2 explaining that the governments of the earth are under Satan's control, and that Jehovah's Heavenly Kingdom with Jesus Christ as King would bring an end to Satan's corrupt system. We then explained that because of this Jehovah's witnesses  worldwide are unitedly neutral when it comes to politics and wars. Up until this point he was fairly quiet, and mainly just listened with interest.  I offered the Good News brochure pointing to the cover where people from all nations are depicted. As he thumbed through the pages he began  to ask various questions - "So you mean Jehovah's Witnesses will not go to war and support the troops?", no I explained, and no matter what country we are in. "What about blood, you don't take transfusions?, No I explained. "What about Smoking?", again I quickly explained smoking was not acceptable to Jehovah's witnesses".  Then, he said "so how does a person become a "proselytizer?"  Well, I said, We use this book - What does the Bible Really Teach" and as a person studies the bible with us, they come to a point where they have to make a decision to serve Jehovah and tell others about Jehovah and his Kingdom., then they can preach to others. Then he casually said "where is the Kingdom Hall and what time, I would like to go?
We gave him the address and time, and offered to come back later that week to demonstrate the study. He said today was his only day off and that he worked 2 jobs - 11 AM to Midnight.
Hopefully the new Congregation here in Orem will find him home when they call back or even meet him at the Kingdom Hall one day.

Our trip to Orem went very well, leaving Portland at 12:51 on Friday and stopping in LaGrande for pizza while Leon met Joe and Rosemary Crowder and Joe Albreck at the KH for a painting/decor consultation.  From there as darkness fell on our way to Ontario we watched a lightning display unlike any of us has seen in a long time. It was all completely dry until the last suitcase was hauled into our hotel. Then a complete downpour began!

On Saturday, the drive went smoothly and we ran ahead of schedule arriving at our house in Sundance at 4pm. This was even though we took a 45 min stop in Draper, which is north of Orem, to stop in at a house that had a group of twenty-two from Cottage Grove which they had rented to also work in Orem.  We picked up some territory maps at their house. They had attended the new Orem congregation meeting, which is on Saturdays at 1:00 pm. They said some they called on that week from the territory had come to the meeting.

The house we rented works well for the seventeen of us and has the most spectacular view from the deck off the living/dining room. It has a view directly of Stewart Falls. Like last year, we were like little kids as we ran through the house looking at all the rooms and discovering each new deck. The deck is actually the roof over the master bedroom and there is another lawn that is the roof over the another parlor area, a true green roof.

When we got here there was a man that was trying to fix some things. One of the things broken was the main kitchen faucet. He did not have a replacement and so he improvised a handle out of a stapler.

Four of the sisters did the shopping at Costco and Winco, spending $1,000 for the week's food.  It turns out it will cost each person $58 for food for the week.

When it was put to a vote about going in service on Sunday morning, no one voted to go. We all wanted to do the Watchtower study out on the deck! The deck is set up well for an outdoor study. With the backdrop of Stewart Falls, we sat under the gazebo and had speakers so we could even sing Kingdom songs that brought tears to the eyes of many. The Watchtower study was less like at the meeting and more like a round table discussion that got very involved. After over an hour and a half we had only studied through paragraph 14. We had to postpone the rest so we could make service that afternoon.

Sunday afternoon we met up with the Weathers at the Scera Park in downtown Orem for the meeting for field service. Brother Weathers talked about what has changed here since last year. The biggest thing is that a congregation has been formed in Orem. It has 58 publishers, 25 regular pioneers, 6 special pioneers and 9 elders. The territory is starting to change as well. There has been a break in the Mormon church in this area. Several issues have been devisive, primarily homosexuality. Brother Weathers said that our usual presentation should work but just asking questions and getting them to open up about what is going on in their church has led to some very good discussions and Bible studies.

dinner with the Weathers and Woessners

On Sunday night we had Jeff and Barbara Weathers up to the house for a
Tri-Tip dinner. Ted and Heidi Woesnner also came up for the meal. They are one of several couples that have been assigned to the territory from Couples School. It was an upbuilding evening of discussion. The Weather's are Gilead graduates and have served in Liberia, the Caribbean and now here in Orem. We very much enjoyed the evening with some awesome brothers and sisters!
